Cardiac catheterization is one treatment for diseases such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, which are caused by blockage or narrowing of blood vessels (coronary arteries) in the heart due to cholesterol or other causes.
In the past, the treatment usually consisted of drug therapy or, in the case of severe symptoms, major chest surgery. In contrast, catheterization, in which a thin tube called a catheter is inserted from wrist or leg to widen narrowed blood vessels, has become common in recent years. This treatment is now the mainstream treatment method. It involves less pain because it isminimally invasiveand avoids opening up the chest, and is more economical for the patient because it shortens hospital stays and enables people to get back to their normal life more quickly.
